Abstract: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) encounter numerous challenges, with authentication as a critical issue. In response, digital certificates are employed by all nodes in MANETs. However, the presence of malicious nodes poses a threat to network functionality. This study introduces an efficient non-voting-based mechanism, the Improved Non-Voting-Based System (INVBS), designed to detect and manage malicious nodes disrupting the network. INVBS uses packet loss to differentiate and revoke certificates of these nodes, blacklisting the accused node and whitelisting the reporter, effectively barring blacklisted nodes from the network. To enhance accuracy in identifying malicious nodes, INVBS considers packet dropping due to link failures, mobility issues and traffic load intensity through the non-voting mechanism. The effectiveness of INVBS is validated through theoretical investigations and NS-2 simulations, showcasing a remarkable average improvement of 44.80% in Packet Delivery Ratio and 10.49% in throughput compared to the existing CCRVC approach. Moreover, INVBS exhibits promising enhancements of 1.73% and 2.78% in node speed vs. accuracy compared to CCRVC and non-voting, respectively. These results underscore INVBS as a compelling solution for MANET security, offering superior network performance and increased resilience against malicious nodes.
