Abstract: The factors influencing cultural communications in cross-border interactions are complex and include transmission distance, spatial diffusion friction, cultural potential energy, cultural innovation, and cultural inertia. This study examined the influence of cross-border pilgrimages, from India to Tibet, on the music preferences of Tibetan youth in a case study and examined the factors affecting the spread of Indian music, including the underlying mechanism of its spread. The findings indicated that the influences of the physical distance between the source culture and the destination culture and spatial diffusion friction on the cultural transmission became less significant as advancements in information technology occurred. Also, the research revealed that factors such as the cultural communication energy and cultural innovation based on cultural identity played a more important role in this process of transmission than the other factors.

Keywords: pop music; cross-border communication; cultural diffusion; identity recognition.
