Abstract: An academic subject, ||Manufacturing Systems Engineering||, proposed in 1975, is historically reviewed by defining manufacturing/production systems, and manufacturing systems. The social role and future perspective of manufacturing systems (engineering) are also discussed, stressing ||socially appropriate manufacturing|| as manufacturing excellence for the 21st century.
