Abstract: There has been an exponential growth in the population to urban cities from the past few decades. The shift from the rural areas is due to the enormous facilities available in the cities, especially the infrastructure and a mammoth market for jobs. A smart city would be a city with smart people, a smart environment, smart technology, smart energy, smart transportation, smart information technology and communication, and smart governance. This research uses a systematic review of the literature. It focuses on the issues and challenges faced while building and maintaining a smart city as overpopulation is a rising cause of concern. In a smart city, big data and artificial intelligence would create an infrastructure that enhances people's living conditions. It is all about using advanced technology creatively.
