Abstract: Integrity of materials is not an end in itself but always a way to ensure that the end product meets the specification. Therefore, after scientific discoveries, the critical step from idea to product is whether it is possible to ensure material and structural integrity through production and lifecycle. Hence there must be fast, standardised monitoring methods, and that failure mechanisms are understood to assess product reliability. Based on decades of industrial experience with microelectronics, quality management tools, anticipatory standardisation and management of environmental/health/safety issues are shown to be essential methods to complete the step from lab to fab.
