Abstract: The traditional printed packaging industry and particularly the labelling sector within, is on the threshold of major technological change, the like of which has not been experienced by the industry for more than a century, if ever. This change is being brought about by the introduction of digital technologies to the print process. If the pattern seen in other industries is to be repeated, this will mean massive alterations to the traditional paradigms of the packaging industry. It may even threaten its very existence. This paper examines the implications of digital print technology for the packaging industry in terms of the both the threats and opportunities it presents.

Keywords: digital print; efficient consumer response; infopartnering; labelling; mass customisation; packaging; printing; retailer power; supply chain management.
