Abstract: The aim of the present examination was to find strength of friction stir (FS) welds done using two sets of tool rotation speed and welding speed, and also to compare between single- and double-sided FS welding process for mechanical strength. Friction stir welding (FSW) is utilised for welding plates. Afterwards, single and double pass processes were applied to know comparative behaviour and effect of pass on mechanical strength. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM) were carried out to characterise microstructure. Optimised values of mechanical strength as ultimate tensile strength (UTS) i.e., 339.23 N/mm2 and yield strength i.e., 248.13 N/mm2 were evaluated under double pass friction conditions at 1800 RPM, and 35 mm/min. Consequences of single and double passes were considered on variable parameters i.e., tool rotational speed (1800 RPM), welding speed (35 mm/min). Comparative strength corresponding to optical microstructures were studied for single and double passes.
