Abstract: Microfinance has been proven to be an enabler for the eradication of poverty, women empowerment, and employment generation. The success of microfinance interventions largely depends on the type of loan, its utilisation, and the overall status of non-performing assets in the sector. This evidence-based article using secondary data from the Indian microfinance sector discusses two important questions regarding the Indian microfinance sector: One on the portfolio of micro-loans and the second question on the condition of non-performing assets in the sector. The findings of the study are significant because it indicates the credit situation, which depicts the overall health of the Indian microfinance sector.

Keywords: microfinance; loan portfolio; non-performing assets.
