Abstract: The aim of this paper is analysing the gearing torque capacity versus reduction ratio of a novel pericyclic gear reducer (PGR) and comparing it with that of planetary gear transmission (PGT) considering teeth size, contact ratio and geometry factor of gears as the main factors. The biggest tooth size in interference-free condition is generated by a MATLAB code for both PGT and PGR all over the reduction-ratio band. It concludes with coarser teeth for the PGR in a much wider ratio band (i.e., 3-50) than those for the PGT (i.e., 4-6). Other factors such as: length of torque arm, determinacy of load distribution on gears, materials, load factor, pitch-line velocity, lubrication and gear finishing, are considered. Based on tooth bending and pitting criteria, it is shown that PGR preserves higher torque capacity in a much wider ratio band: 3-50 than PGT. PGT's torque capacity severely weakens in ratios above 10.
