Abstract: This research aims to investigate the potential of corporate social responsibility (CSR) to influence the link between workplace union presence (WUP) and firm financial performance (FPR). The estimation of a dynamic panel data model on a sample of 91 listed French companies (SBF 120) over the period 2011-2018 revealed a significant negative relationship between workplace trade unionism, proxied by the number of board directors elected by employees and sponsored by unions, and return on assets (ROA). Moreover, the negative impact of workplace labour unionism on firm financial performance tends to lessen when the company displays better CSR performance.

Keywords: workplace unionism; firm profitability; ESG; moderation effect; collective voice; monopoly voice; SBF120.
