Abstract: This editorial sets the context for the special issue examining the contribution of universities to regional and economic growth. The context is extremely dynamic, and some outcomes of all these efforts appear very promising; however a number of obstacles and difficulties that make the interaction between university and industry scarcely effective in many cases still exist. Even though an increasing number of academic contributions have attempted to understand, explain, and justify these interactions, we still have difficulty in understanding if winning models can be identified, and leverages can be used to reduce barriers. This special issue aims at providing both scholars and practitioners with experiences and concepts useful to add another piece to the |puzzle| for gaining a deeper comprehension of the way to improve university–industry technology transfer.

Keywords: technology transfer; universities; knowledge transfer; university research; economic growth; economic development; regional growth; national growth; university-industry cooperation; industrial cooperation.
