Abstract: The wind farm layout optimisation problem (WFLOP) is the placement of wind turbines in a given wind farm that result in the maximisation of the power output and minimisation of the wake losses. There are many swarm intelligence (SI)-based approaches that have been tested for the optimal placement of wind turbines. This article provides a solution for WFLOP using a modified artificial bee colony based approach which falls under SI algorithms. Here, global best artificial bee colony (GABC) algorithm is modified to enhance its efficiency. The proposed strategy is termed as progressive global best ABC (PGABC) algorithm. The proposed PGABC algorithm provides optimum locations for 10 turbines, 14 turbines, and 19 turbines respectively for 500, 750, and 1,000 metres considered circular wind farms. Further the wake loss is minimised for all the considered cases significantly. The obtained outcomes validate the authenticity of the proposed PGABC approach to solve WFLOP.
