Abstract: This study gives an extensive review of the literature that exists concerning social identity theory (SIT). This paper helps to identify the recent trends in SIT in business research gaps. A search query on social identity theory yielded a total of 117 research publications from the Scopus database, which were then bibliometrically analysed using the bibliometrix R-package and VOSviewer. The theory development, characteristics, context and methodology (TCCM) framework has been employed for theory development and to identify gaps in existing research and future research direction. Results show a comprehensive picture of the existing literature on social identity from many perspectives and serve as the foundation for building a research agenda that connects components linked to social identity to purchase intention. The suggested research agenda is unique in that it integrates numerous stages of social identity theory with purchasing intention and offers a distinct outlook for future researches.
