Abstract: The peripheral blood volume variations are measured at the skin surface, using a source of light and a photodetector, performed by a non-invasive technology called photoplethysmography. In recent times, much interest has been shown by countless researchers worldwide to obtain valuable information from pulse waveform besides oxygen saturation measurement, pulse rate and heart rate evaluation. Photoplethysmography-based techniques are the preferable method for wearable devices. Each derivative of the pulse waveform carries beneficial information related to health. The evolution in wearable cardiac monitoring devices has paved the way for individualised medical care. The application of multi-spectral photoplethysmography in various areas of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as myocardial infarction, arterial parameters estimation, arrhythmias, heart rate variability (HRV) detection discussed by researchers are presented in this article. This review gives an extensive overview of currently improved technologies that are applied in cardiovascular disease diagnosis using multi-spectral photoplethysmography.
