Abstract: This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the efficiency of cooperatives and wine industries located in southern Brazil, using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The input and output definitions were based on literature review about DEA application in the wine sector. Data was collected based on the information available in the sector, resulting from a census research, and complemented by a field study. The results indicated an average efficiency of 0.318, ranging from a minimum of 0.011 to a maximum of 1. The standard deviation was 0.241, showing a coefficient of variation of 75.7%. From the 280 analysed companies, only ten showed efficiency rates equal to 1, which shows a considerable room for improvements. The efficient DMUs were from younger and leaner companies. These companies had higher revenues and net profits 2.5 times higher than the total sample. The findings of this research can assist both in the definition of public policies for the wine sector and in the identification of actions to improve less efficient companies.
