Abstract: In this article, a multi-dimensional, multi-objective optimisation method to manage the network as per specific requirement while considering the constraints of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is studied. A particle swarm optimisation (PSO) based technique is used to address the energy management and lifetime issues. A predefined percentage of nodes are assumed as supernodes having higher energy than ordinary nodes. Supernodes are used as cluster head to enhance the lifetime of the network. Free space and fading channel models are considered to evaluate the performance of the PSO based WSNs. The location of the sink node and node density are varied to study the effect on network performance matrices. The population of supernodes are also varied to demonstrate their effect on the network while keeping all the other parameters unchanged. Energy consumed by each cluster head (CH) is also studied to observe the load distribution among the CHs.
