Abstract: This paper reviews recent advances in research focusing on the design and operation of a membrane bioreactor and including methodologies for determining the timing for hydraulic and sludge retention, sludge concentration optimisation, the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, membrane fouling control, and the analysis of processing economics.
