Abstract: Most of the management and routing protocols in multihop wireless networks rely on strict connectivity condition among nodes. In this paper, we construct mathematical framework to model connectivity of wireless ad hoc and wireless sensor networks. We use the distribution of the distance between the nodes to calculate the transmission power required to establish connection between the neighbouring nodes. Then, we present route distribution model to establish routes between the nodes that are not directly connected. The results show that the transmission power is required to establish a connected network depends on the number of nodes in the network as well as distribution of the nodes. The results are analysed for low, medium and high density networks for uniform and Poisson distributed nodes. The results show that a connected network is achieved at relatively lower transmission power if nodes establish multihop routes with each other.
