Abstract: In view of its relative biological wealth, the potential for developing Colombia|s capacity to develop genetic and biochemical resources - or ||bioresources|| - as well as to provide such resources to a growing international biotechnology market merits serious consideration. In support of such capacities, this report focuses on 1 recent and emerging trends within the international biotechnology market; 2 the interrelationships between the biotechnology market and commercial demand for genetic and biochemical materials from wild sources; and 3 a precedent-setting model and approach that Colombia can replicate consistent with its own needs to develop and engage in this market.
