Abstract: The increase in population, urbanisation, production and demand for raw materials is a sign that it is time to rethink the current economic model. The aim of this study is to present public policies instituted by Japan, the European Union and China as national strategies for transition to the circular economy. The methodology is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive, using bibliographic and documentary research extracted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases and official platforms. Legislation based on circular economy principles was enacted in these countries with scarce resources and a need for waste management. The European Union has implemented policies aligning the transition to the circular economy with climate change mitigation measures, with benefits for consumers and citizens. Japan has shaped a sustainable society model based on the 3Rs principle of reduce, reuse and recycle, while China has adopted circular economy policies as a national development strategy. In this context, it is perceived that the implemented public policies can be adapted to other territories as well as Latin American countries.

Keywords: China; European Union; Japan; Latin American countries; public policies; circular economy; sustainability.
