Abstract: This study provides a systematic investigation of the performance of India's seaport container terminals. The aim of this study is to assess the terminals' performance by evaluating their relative efficiencies using data envelopment analysis along with the window analysis for the sensitivity of the results. Our analysis identifies efficient and inefficient terminals and evaluates their efficiency over time. We find that landlord-operated terminals managed by major ports located on the western coast are better performing than private terminals managed by minor ports on the eastern coast. However, two landlord-operated terminals of major ports on the eastern coast are found to be the most efficient. Our study suggests the scope of improvement for the inefficient terminals and concludes with managerial insights for maritime transport stakeholders.
