Abstract: An optimal design of frac truss based fractal patch antenna for multiband applications devoted to satellite communications is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna is iterative up to 3rd iteration with a miniaturised size of 15 mm × 27 mm on FR4 substrate of dielectric constant 4.4 and thickness of 1.58 mm. There has been a reduction of 54.2% in the copper material of the patch due to fractal slots which leads to the low cost of the antenna design. The resonating behaviour of the proposed design is verified at different thicknesses of the FR4 substrate and other substrates. Limitations of the high index substrate like silicon have been overcome by the process of micro-machining. The proposed design resonates at 6.4, 8.6, 11.8 and 14.5 GHz with a maximum bandwidth of 1.4 GHz. The simulated and measured results shows quite resemblance and prove to be excellent impedance matching at various frequencies of operation.
