Abstract: Cell formation and facility layout formation are the two important steps in a cellular manufacturing system. The cell formation is a combination of part family identification and machine cell formation. The facility layout formation is defined as the determination of the relative locations for allocating the workstations in the available space. In this paper, the cells are assigned optimally in the cellular manufacturing system layout with an objective of minimising the travelling score for a planning horizon using clonal selection algorithm (CSA) considering the entry and exit point of the parts to be processed in the cell in addition to sequence of operation and demand required for a planning horizon. The results obtained by the proposed clonal selection algorithm are compared with the few heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms available in the literature, with the proposed algorithm showing better results.

Keywords: cellular layout; cellular manufacturing system; CMS; clonal selection algorithm; CSA; fixed entry and exit point; total travelling score.
