Abstract: The high volume of sensitive data on the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) coupled with the vulnerability of the wireless infrastructure of the smart grid network made AMI a major target for different attacks. Therefore, to secure metering and communication on AMI, there is a need for an efficient solution that enforces confidentiality, integrity, and privacy preservation. Meanwhile, most of the existing security schemes for AMI are incapable of providing vital security requirements at a low cost. In this paper, we propose an efficient privacy-aware and secure metering and communication scheme for AMI. To achieve this, we develop a scheme containing non-complex key management, data aggregation, and authentication procedures. Our scheme allows data aggregation among m-number of customers for secure multi-hop transmission of metering data.
