Abstract: The paper suggests the basic principles of the diversification strategy of the Stavropol Krai, the complex of which will contribute to the development of the regional economy. It focuses on the systematic accounting of the specifics of a particular territory, the definition of measures that can be taken at the level of administrative decisions of the municipal and regional authorities. This study makes it possible to develop basic principles and directions for the formation of medium and long-term strategic development programs. The directions are analysed that contribute to the creation or significant expansion of new industries, innovation processes, allowing to modernise the technological basis, to form an effective model of the regional economic system in terms of its functions and structure, which, in turn, will ensure the growth of its competitiveness.
