Abstract: The injected power from the renewable energy sources can bring new challenges and problems to the power grid, which already suffers from power quality (PQ) problems. The impact of the integration of the renewable power plants into the electric network corresponding to the level of harmonics and its propagation, besides the initial harmonics resulting from the nonlinear loads itself, has been presented and compensated in this paper. The paper presents the determination of the size of the distributed generation (DG) based on recent optimisation algorithms and a techno-economic feasibility study of PV and wind power plant was evaluated using the RETScreen program. Moreover, the active power filter (APF) has been designed as D-STATCOM for improving the power quality. A comprehensive comparison of the response of the system considering photovoltaic and wind generation with a nonlinear load in both cases with and without the APF is presented using MATLAB/Simulink.
