Abstract: In the 21st century where there is a rapid growth of population, which leads to environment pollution and climate change, the need of smart infrastructure arises. After the evolution of internet of things (IoT), there is a drastic change that occurs in the use of cyber and physical environments. Internet of things has now become the main backbone of various domains as it is used in almost every area. Various areas where internet of things would make major influence are building construction, operation, and management by providing excellent services, providing competent functionalities and tending towards continuous progressive goals. In India, approx. 50% global population lives in cities. Proper planning of new cities is important and improvement in existing infrastructure of old cities is also required. In this paper, we discussed about the infrastructural needs and use of internet of things for a smart city to make it smart, i.e., make more effective use of infrastructure using artificial intelligence and data analytics for providing a healthy and safe environment.
