Abstract: This article investigates the implementation of a competitive swarm optimiser (CSO) algorithm for solving the optimal capacitor locations and sizing (OCLS) problems for radial distribution system (RDS) networks. The problem is formulated as a two-stage mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. In the first stage, a new parameter called relative emission index is developed to assess the impact of shunt capacitors (SC) on environment and using the same, the probable capacitors' locations are determined and in the second stage, a novel CSO algorithm is applied to find the optimal capacitors' locations and sizes in RDS networks. The SC locations and their output are taken as binary and discrete control variables respectively in the optimisation problem. The proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE 34 bus and IEEE 85 bus RDS networks with different loading conditions. The parametric sensitivity studies are performed to select the optimum values of the free parameters of the CSO algorithm. The results obtained by this proposed algorithm are compared with other reported results in the state-of-art literature and the comparison confirms the superiority of CSO algorithm over other methods in solving OCLS problems for RDS networks.
