Abstract: Various evolution S-curve models of core technology, such as the dynamic model, parallel model, tandem model and combined model, were presented from the point of view of product innovation. A core technology decision-making method incorporating different tools, such as Porter|s competitive force model, TRIZ technology evolution theory and system operator, was proposed. Applying this method can make technology managers identify technologies that possess competitive power, and, furthermore, forecast their evolutionary trend and evaluate their competitive potential. The technical strategy decision method for new product development was studied by analysing core technologies| evolution path, which can guide enterprises to focus on the right technical strategy and corresponding innovation strategy, consequently speeding up core technology|s maturation. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate the validity of the methods in new product development.
