Abstract: Tool life varied when different workpiece materials were machined, even the same tool under the different machining environments. If cutting tools match with workpiece materials correctly and rationally, it can efficiently improve the machining and greatly reduce the machining cost. With the advantage of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), the case description, similarity, attributes weight and decision-making process are discussed in this paper. Intelligent selection strategies of tool materials are discussed under such respects as mechanical, physical and chemical properties. An intelligent selection system for tool materials based on CBR is also developed. Under the control of this system, combining the selection strategies with constraint-based adaptation conditions, the matching results can be properly selected on the basis of previous successful matching cases, which is helpful for the selection of tool materials.
