Abstract: The First and the Second Russian International Conferences on Material Protection, Control and Accounting (MPC&A), held in 1997 and 2000, under the US-Russian programme of the MPC&A cooperation, proved to be a useful tool for Russian and US specialists and experts from other countries for sharing their opinions and exchanging achievements in this sensitive area. The recommendation to hold the third MPC&A Conference in Russia was formulated in the final document of the second conference in 2000. The results of the US-Russian cooperation are especially valuable because they demonstrate how much can be done through the joint efforts of even previously adversarial countries. This paper gives a summary of the main findings of the Third Russian Conference on the MPC&A with a specific emphasis on physical protection of Russian nuclear materials and nuclear facilities.
