Abstract: Fibres in the waste have a strong influence on shear strength. This is because even though the waste is characterised as a coarse material with a non-cohesive granular behaviour, it may nevertheless display high values of pseudocohesion due to the effect of the tensile strength of the fibre inclusions. Samples of pretreated residue with different particle sizes were prepared to study this effect. The samples were obtained by sifting the residue and then determining its shear strength by using conventional shear box testing equipment. A new model for predicting the shear strength of the treated waste residue was established based on these results. This model accounts for the influence of fibre inclusions on the shear strength of the pretreated waste residues.
