Abstract: The digital age is an era of disruption and is rapidly transforming the environments we work in. This brings about great challenges for leaders of organisations who now have to deal with disruptive business landscapes, changing workforce as well as new ways of working. Thus leaders of the digital age need new skills, abilities and a different way of thinking. This calls for fundamental changes in the way leaders lead and are developed. Traditional leadership models may be inadequate to prepare our future leaders for the digital age. Moreover, research in the area of the interrelatedness of digital and leadership is scarce. Based on the literature review, practitioner experience and critical analysis this conceptual paper explores the changing paradigms related to leadership style and competencies in the digital age. A new perspective on digital leadership will help practitioners better select and develop digital leaders within their organisations.
