Abstract: This paper studies the corrosion phenomenon by taking three aspects into consideration. The first one is the use of a model, which allows interpreting by analogy the concept of standard potential of the electrode. The second one is an exhaustive analysis of the work of the iron-oxygen cell. It permits to show the significance of the different variables involved in the corrosion process. The last aspect studied is the development, and its basis, of mechanisms of anodic protection, which were analysed by examining the work of the magnesium-iron-oxygen cell. These three points have an extreme importance in teaching galvanic cells, as the strategies used by the teacher as well as the most important goal of the matter, which is to prevent the corrosion process.

Keywords: corrosion process; galvanic cells; cathodic protection; anodic protection; sacrificial anode; standard potential; iron-oxygen cells; education; teaching; electrode potential.
