Abstract: The present study is focused on welding of AISI 430 steel using AISI 309L wire rod using gas metal arc welding process. The welding voltage, welding speed, wire feed rate and gas flow rate are considered as input process parameters and their ranges are found out for good appearance of weld bead. The experiments are conducted using central composite design matrix and weld bead geometry parameters like bead height, bead width and bead penetration and mechanical properties like tensile strength and hardness are measured. The mathematical models for bead geometry parameters and mechanical properties are developed and the adequacy is checked using analysis of variance. The effects of process parameters on the bead geometry parameters, mechanical properties and microstructure are found out. The thermo-mechanical simulation is carried out using ANSYS simulation software to predict the temperature and stresses distribution in the weldment.
