Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to identify a model that explores the managerial competencies required for organisational effectiveness in port cities. Drawing from qualitative and quantitative research methods, the competency model was analysed and tested. The results of the statistical test showed that all of the six competency domains specified have a significant impact on organisational effectiveness. Problem solving and management by objectives had the highest and lowest scores respectively, and the highest correlation at the level of individual success was shown to be between professional ethics and systems thinking. This research has value for the development of managerial competency and suggests ways in which port managers can enhance the quality of their work.
