Abstract: Present work investigates treatment of hazardous and persistence 4-hydroxyphenylazobenzene (yellow azo dye) using intensified technologies such as photocatalysis (UV), microwave (MW) and sequential effects of microwave and photocatalysis (MW-UV). The treatment studies were further investigated in the presence of hydroxyl radical promoters such as hydrogen peroxide, copper oxide and titanium oxide. Our results confirmed that the maximum degradation was obtained for MW-UV compare to individual effects of MW and UV. It was 91.6±4.3% in the presence of titanium dioxide for MW-UV effect. TOC removal and degradation rate was 44.6±2.2% and 43.3±2.3 min-1, respectively. The synergy of thermal and non-thermal effects of microwave and formation of active sites during photocatalysis is beneficial for enhancing degradation rate. The technologies based on synergic effects of MW and UV have better potential for treatment of environmentally persistence compounds.
