Abstract: The paper deals with the development of a novel electromechanical system for actuation and position measurement inside a high pressure falling body viscometer. The measurement principle of falling body viscometers is introduced. After a literature review on electromechanical systems used in such viscometers and state of the art stroke sensors, a novel principle is deduced aiming at higher measurement accuracy and smallest building space. After the explanation of the necessary electronics and data processing for the designed system, the paper concludes with experimental results showing the achieved high resolution and accuracy of the measurement system as well as some sample measurement results of the high pressure falling body viscometer.
