Abstract: This study responds to growing concerns about tourism's impacts by examining tourists' responsible behaviour on multiple journey stages across both pre-trip and on-site phases, focusing on Vietnamese destinations. A key innovation is the underexplored concept of 'pre-travel preparedness', which highlights actions tourists take before their trips. The research employs partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) on 331 valid samples to validate a novel sequential mediating pathway where destination social responsibility influences tourists' responsible behaviour via environmental values and pre-travel preparedness, clarifying how values become action. This approach provides a holistic understanding of tourists' responsible behaviour, filling a key literature gap. The findings have practical implications, suggesting that destination managers can promote responsible tourism by enhancing the destination's image of social responsibility and encouraging tourists to prepare responsibly before their arrival. This approach provides a new framework for fostering sustainable tourism.
