Abstract: The role of a fencing coach is complex, requiring a balance of soft skills and technical expertise to meet athletes' evolving needs. Given the demanding nature of competitive fencing, selecting the most suitable coach is critical for optimising performance and fostering physical and mental well-being. This study develops a methodological framework using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate fencing coach selection criteria across an athlete's age categories. By analysing factors prioritised by athletes during different career phases, the framework aids decision-makers in identifying key competencies - such as communication, technical knowledge, and adaptability - that align with developmental stages. Results highlight opportunities to enhance coaching skills and improve team management strategies tailored to athletes' age-specific requirements. The findings offer actionable insights for clubs and institutions to refine coach recruitment, training, and support systems, ensuring coaches effectively nurture athlete potential from youth to elite levels while fostering long-term engagement in the sport.
