Abstract: It has long been recognised that there is a correlation between Gross National Product and energy consumption. The same could be said of education, because the availability of financial resources affects the scope of educational policy. Global energy problems demonstrate the need to improve both the level of energy awareness of the general public and the level of higher education in energy-related fields. These needs are especially acute in the developing world. Unesco, with the assistance of eminent scholars from around the world, is creating a series of engineering courses designed for use in both academic and industrial institutions. The courses have a practical rather than academic bias, while maintaining a strong intellectual base.
