Energy security is an issue of paramount importance. Due to increasing demands, varieties of new sources have been explored and strategies towards increasing energy efficiency have been advocated. These new technologies should provide more flexibility for the energy system as required to deal with the dynamics of the world economy. In making this a reality, safety aspects must be enhanced in tandem with all other developments.

Over the whole spectrum of energy systems, which include electricity and fuels generated from a variety of sources such as nuclear, fossil fuels, hydrogen and fuel cell, solar, biomass, wind, ocean and geothermal as well as others, there are safety aspects to be considered. These safety concerns may be prevalent in one or more stages of the energy supply chain, i.e. production, storage, distribution and application.

This special issue will focus on developments in strategies and techniques to assess and enhance safety levels in energy systems.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Accident modelling and prediction
  • Case studies in safety and security aspects
  • Development of safety indicators
  • Risk management techniques
  • Risk identification, assessment and management techniques and applications
  • Safety barriers and mitigating measures
  • Economic analyses on impacts of safety on energy systems
