Special Issue on: "Recent Advancements in Wireless Machine-to-Machine Communications"

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is a new communication paradigm that allows both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices. A wireless M2M is essentially composed of three key ingredients: 1) a wireless end device, 2) an infrastructure-based or infrastructure-less wireless carrier network, and 3) the back-end server network.

Wireless M2M systems bring exciting new opportunities as well as unparalleled challenges in both research and development. Some of the requirements of M2M communications include zero-outage, real-time response and high efficiency to support reliable, green, long-living and delay-constrained applications.

There are currently two orthogonal approaches contending for the M2M market: 1) cellular solutions which rely on wide coverage (GSM, UMTS, LTE, LTE-A, etc.), and 2) purely embedded short-range solutions relying on cheap deployments (low-power Wi-Fi, ultralow-power Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc.).

The main purpose of this special issue is to present recent advancements related to wireless M2M communications from industrial and academic researchers and practitioners. We are interested in analytical, experimental and systems-related papers.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include but are not limited to:

  • Architectures of M2M communications
  • Applications and case studies of M2M communications
  • Data-centric approaches (M2M data fusion, aggregation, source coding, signal processing, etc.)
  • Protocol-centric approaches (novel PHY, MAC and networking paradigms, etc.)
  • Technology-centric approaches (cellular M2M technologies, capillary M2M technologies, etc.)
  • Inter-system and heterogeneous approaches (M2M coexistence with other technologies, etc.)
  • Key functionalities (security, synchronisation, virtualisation, etc.)
  • Lessons learned from M2M communications

Notes for Prospective Authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. (N.B. Conference papers may only be submitted if the paper has been completely re-written and if appropriate written permissions have been obtained from any copyright holders of the original paper).

All papers are refereed through a peer review process.

All submissions should include an abstract (maximum 200 words) and a title page containing the corresponding author's contact information. These should be sent by email to the Guest Editors:
