The objective of this special issue is to report the most recent research in advanced knowledge- and agent-based technologies and applications. Knowledge intelligent techniques have been successfully applied to solve problems in fields such as management systems, service sciences, manufacturing industries and so on. Agent technologies have also been studied to develop distributed intelligent systems and analyse social problems.

However, the potentialities of knowledge- and agent-based systems compared to traditional techniques have not been adequately investigated. A focus of the knowledge system community is on intelligent systems to interact with humans using natural language and human-human communication, while these aspects are also fundamental for the agent system community, a focus of which is on intelligent systems in environments of bounded rationality.

The main purpose of this issue is to bring together these communities to exchange latest results, to join efforts in solving common challenges, and to establish an effective communication between researchers and developers involved in both areas in order to create a worthwhile synergy. To support this goal, the issue will feature several tracks devoted to social networks, internet technologies and cyber-physical systems, as well as tracks devoted to common themes such as pervasive cloud computing, service sciences, data mining techniques and trustworthy computing. The research and development of these systems which exploit knowledge in the target domain is at the forefront of modern research.

We welcome both academic and practical contributions in all aspects of multi-data processing technologies.
