Abstract: This paper presents a survey of characteristics, balances, stabilities, reliability and regimes of Electric Power Systems (EPS) and Interconnected Electric Power Systems (IEPS). They are the most complicated and important |machines| that have ever been created by humankind. Introduction of deregulation in the EPS will require and impose new systems, new algorithms and new rules for control. EPS are subject to physical laws which are objective, i.e., these laws do not depend on us. They cannot be revoked or changed. That is why highly qualified technical specialists should have a leading role during decision making and restructuring EPS.

Keywords: electric power systems; EPS; control; deregulation; balances; reliability; characteristics; tasks; regimes; electricity generation; power generation; distribution.
