Abstract: Since the shock of Chernobyl in 1988, the real world has developed differently than we expected. |Too bad for reality|, one might say cynically. But for policy making, that is not enough. That is why I am pleading in favour of reopening the debate of the nuclear issue - even if some may think it to be Pandora|s box. To European energy policy, this would mean that we treat nuclear energy like other forms of energy and that we decide on a case-by-case basis which forms of energy production should be promoted or slowed down. The energy discussion should be ridded of taboos.

Keywords: European Union; EU energy policy; hierarchy of risks; nuclear re-evaluation; nuclear energy; nuclear power; Europe.
