Abstract: In this paper, a design which uses a novel internal combustion-linear generator integrated power system (ICLGIPS) to replace conventional internal combustion engine-generator as auxiliary power unit of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) is proposed. The design can simplify structure, reduce size and improve efficiency compared with the conventional internal combustion engine-generator, more importantly, the characteristics of operating conditions regardless of load changes and maintain steady economy of engine working in the optimal fuel region, can meet the high efficiency energy flow requirement of EREVs. UC banks as the high efficiency charge/discharge power buffer unit added to ICLGIPS can temporarily store the energy generated by linear generator (LEG) of ICLGIPS.

Keywords: extended-range electric vehicles; EREVs; UC banks; auxiliary power units; internal combustion-linear generator integrated power systems; ICLGIPS; energy storage system; ESS; power buffer.
