Abstract: In recent years, pharmaceutical R&D has increasingly been affected by two main factors. On the one hand, there is a technology push factor related to the development of biotechnology and, on the other hand, there is the demand pull related to the growing R&D performance required by the market. In this paper, on the basis of the empirical study, the main R&D related cost and revenue drivers affecting the pharmaceutical industry have been identified. Then, the impact of biotechnology (in particular of genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics) on each R&D cost and R&D led revenue driver has been analysed. Finally, we have commented on future perspectives related to biotech|s impact on the pharmaceutical industry. Clearly, biotechnology is in continuous development and its impact on firms and markets has to be further evaluated. However, we hope that this work could offer a first systematisation of the matter and, also, the cue for further research in this area.

Keywords: biotechnology; genomics; proteomics; bioinformatics; pharmaceutical R&D; R&D cost drivers; R&D led revenue drivers.
