Abstract: Research establishments are mainly supported in order to generate scientific results. They also produce economic effects in the short run. The paper classifies these effects and reports the results of several field studies which quantify increases of industrial turnover induced by two big European research organisations (CERN and ESA). The existence of other effects, such as the creation of employment, investment and additional tax revenue, is demonstrated by these studies. Ways of quantifying these effects are also proposed.

Keywords: public research; economic effects; quantification; increased turnover; employment; investment; surplus; social return; tax revenue; scientific research; CERN; ESA.
