Abstract: Traditional definitions of productivity often fail to consider the factors of effectiveness and efficiency. In measuring the productivity of machine centres in manufacturing operations, it is important to take into account such factors as the interaction between the operator, the machine, raw materials and maintenance. The authors suggest an approach to productivity measurement which incorporates factors directly associated with machine performance as a means of identifying and reducing downtime.

Keywords: productivity measurement; machining centres; machine utilisation; process efficiency; downtime; machine performance.
